TV and Radio Reception Surveys – We discharge TV and radio related planning conditions for proposed developments by conducting pre and post-construction television reception surveys and reception impact analysis. A baseline / pre-construction study involves measurements of baseline television and radio signal reception conditions, prediction and assessment of impacts and effects, and the identification of suitable mitigation. These comprehensive technical investigations provide expert opinion and satisfy standard EIA and other planning requirements for large wind farms, tall buildings and other substantial structures where a study on the effects on telecommunications and broadcast service reception is required. A post-construction study involves the measurement and analysis of post-construction (wind turbine post-erection) reception conditions, assessment of actual impacts and effects (e.g. reported interference) and the identification / verification of suitable mitigation to restore the reception of broadcast services.

2G (GSM / GPRS), 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE) Mobile Phone Network Signal Surveys – We provide nationwide independent coverage surveys to assess the current and likely availability of
mobile phone networks around a proposed development, building or even along a road network. Such assessments are often required by LPAs to demonstrate that consideration has been given by a developer to ensure mobile phone signal coverage is unaffected by a proposed building or redevelopment, and more recently, that a building has good coverage internally prior to handover or finish. Such a survey can bolster Wired Certification scores. We can also locate and identify the causes of interference. Coverage reports often accompany our other services, such as a television / radio reception survey and reception impact assessment, or EIA Telecommunications Chapter.
—
ES and EIA Telecommunications Chapters / Electronic Interference Chapters – Many large developments require telecommunications impact assessments in order to satisfy planning conditions. This is particularly relevant for London based schemes and is referred to in The London Plan and other Regional and Local Development Frameworks and Plans. We prepare and write these ES / EIA Chapters, covering all broadcast and telecommunications matters. We’ve covered Croydon, Liverpool, Southampton, Manchester, Salford, Birmingham and the majority of London Boroughs. A full list of ES / EIA projects can be found here.
—
Wind Turbine Television Impact Assessments and Reception Surveys – For a single wind turbine or a large wind farm, we produce technical reports to assist in discharging radio and television interference associated
planning conditions or for the inclusion in an EIA submission. The
reports also contain the baseline reception data to assist in the
identification of any future interference claim. The modelling is
presented in a GIS / mappable format (MapInfo TAB files) and will
indicate areas of interference severity and also postcode data to assist
in the understanding of how many potentially affected households exist
and where they are located. We can undertake such surveys anywhere in the UK and Ireland and all mapping used is under licence to enable publication of the work.
—
Radio, Radio Frequency and Television Interference Investigations – We investigate and are able to identify the causes of reported television and
radio interference and offer technical solutions to restore the
reception of any services for any affected broadcast service user.
—
Television and Radio Reception Impact Assessments / Technical Reports & Desktop Studies – We produce
detailed desktop based technical studies and reception impact
investigations to discharge television and radio reception related planning conditions for wind farms, wind turbines and building developments.
—
Airwave / TETRA Network Signal Surveys – We undertake detailed pre and post-construction Airwave / TETRA surveys to determine coverage around development sites to discharge related planning conditions. In the UK, Airwave Solutions operates the emergency services TETRA network. This work is normally required where a development is near to a large busy public place (e.g. a large shopping centre), police station or other facility where good and robust emergency services radio network coverage is vital. Work is normally presented in a technical report which can be submitted to the LPA or for the client’s reference.
—
Radio Drive Testing –
We can perform automated radio network drive tests, providing
an unbiased assessment and discussion of reception conditions
from analysis of received audio, field strength values and bit error
rates for (DAB) digital broadcast and analogue radio broadcast networks. We also
drive test 2G, 3G and 4G mobile phone networks and TETRA radio networks. Classic ‘heat maps’ showing signal levels and signal qualities are normally our first choice for displaying key performance metrics.

Line-of-Sight (LOS) Surveys, LOS Verification and Panoramic Photography – Using our survey vehicles and installed 12m Clark and 21m AP2000 masts, we operate and control professional digital camera equipment (50 megapixel+ DSLRs) to take 360-degree panoramic photographs and HD video at heights up to 21m (70 feet) AGL. This solution offers significant advantages over UAVs / drones which cannot be legally flown within 150 metres of a congested area and 50 metres of a person, vessel, vehicle or structure – the majority of UK cities and towns.
—
Mast Based Time-Lapse Video Surveys, Photography and Data Collection – We provide short and long-term leased static light and heavy-duty military specification masts (up to 30m / 98feet AGL) supporting camera, video and other electronic sensor equipment. IP66 rated enclosed equipment can be left in situ on site; being fully operational for up to 21 days at a time, without the need for attention or user intervention. Project managers can also access live feeds via 3G or 4G services (if available in the area) or by downloading data via a local wireless network or enabled laptop. Quickly deployable and more portable masts (up to 2.5m AGL and under 1kg) are also available for work where higher elevations are not required.
—
RF Survey Support Vehicles – Our specialist survey vehicles can be adapted for any receive or transmit purpose, providing telecommunications and broadcast network operators with additional independent broadcast, survey or technical trials resource. All installed test and measurement equipment is high specification lab-quality, fully calibrated and can be configured to suite many requirements. Our 4×4 capability offers RF survey / transmit solutions in areas where less robust vehicles can operate safely.
